Everything You Need To Know Before Getting Keratin Hair Treatment

Hair is made up of keratin, a tough protein chain formed by the crosslinking of amino acids, and a combination of water, lipids, and minerals. In damaged strands, due to wear or chemical damage, the crosslinks can break, which can make the hair prone to fall out and break. As the hair loses moisture and nourishment, the protein bonds loosen, leaving you with frizzy and dull locks. While deep conditioning at home can help tremendously, you may need to call in the big guns if the breakage gets too severe. We asked the professionals what you need to know because you are making an appointment for an in-salon protein treatment.

What is the benefit of a keratin treatment?

There are different types and formulations of protein treatments available today and adding or replacing the loss of protein with a treatment that works best for your hair type will make it smoother, shinier, and healthier. They also improve the elasticity of the hair follicle by stimulating the protein matrix, which then restores and seals the cuticle, thus preventing transepidermal water loss. Keratin treatments are the most popular type. “Keratin treatment is all about having manageable, sleek, fuss-free hair with a blow-dry look worthy of a salon,” says Bhandary. “During a keratin treatment, protein is artificially added to the hair to fill in porous spots. These excessively porous strands curl easily, get tangled and break, ”explains Bhandary. “A person with extremely curly hair might end up with wavy curls. On the other hand, a person with wavy hair would end up with straight, polished hair, ”she says.

How is the process going?

Before treatment, the hair is thoroughly cleaned to remove oils and product residue. After the hair is washed, the keratin product is applied from root to tip while combing to ensure even distribution. Next, the stylist will blow-dry the hair until it is 75-80% moisture-free, then start to dry it gently. Then, after a few passes with the flat iron, the hair is smoother and smoother for up to three months, explains Santosh Velu, creative director at Jean-Claude Biguine Salons India.

Does Keratin Hair Treatment Work For Everyone?

It is important to note that this type of treatment is not one size fits all. “Before you go to the salon, check whether a keratin treatment is right for your hair. Just because your best friend liked it doesn’t mean it’s going to be right for you, too. According to most hairdressers, hair with curly or frizzy textures is best suited for undergoing keratin treatment. On the other hand, thin, moderately straight hair should avoid treatment altogether, ”says Bhandary, as heat treatment and heavy protein could weigh thin, thin hair rather than condition it.
